This display piece has been turned from Australian Red Mallee Burl, with a base of Purpleheart and stained poplar struts. Red Mallee (Eucalyptus socialis) is truly gorgeous, one of the great turning woods of the world and much in demand, even as it is extremely hard and difficult to handle on a lathe. It is also very expensive, and I try to use every scrap of significant size. This is as large as a piece as I can salvage 10” wide by 7” high. But it gives a wonderful sense of the color and figure of this wonder wood. One side is the actual “heartwood,” the other side reveals the burl exterior, which has considerable interest in its own right. It is thus a handsome and double-sided display piece.
10” wide x 7” high (including base)
