Spalted Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is from Southeast Asia and has unique, black spalted color and contrast. The wood gives it spider web patterns that add character and excitement to its appearance. The spalting comes from colonies of fungi, which exist in considerable number, hence the unusual pattern. It is fairly difficult to turn, but the wood is so striking that form definitely is subordinate to its colors and patterns.
(The fungi are obviously no longer active!)
